Denial Is Not a River in Egypt
"The most important part of recovery
is to 'lighten' up." Anyone who has ever felt humor's power to heal
will second this saying - and will find a wealth of wit to support
it in this delightful book. A collection of the quips and wise sayings,
epigrams and home truths that have seen so many through troubled
times and recovery. Denial Is Not A River In Egypt delivers
dose after dose of the best medicine. Embellished with whimsical
hieroglyphics, these well-chosen quotations on fear, denial, insanity,
ego, resentment, acceptance, healing and laughter will brighten
the day of readers in any stage of recovery.

Alcoholics Anonymous : Reproduction
of the First Printing of the First Edition
For over 60 years, AA's "Big
Book" has brought comfort and hope to millions looking for a way
through the fire of alcoholic addiction. The reprint of the "First
Edition" (the book is now in it's Fourth) allows a look at the origin
of the program, as well as an opportunity to assess the changes
that have occurred in the last 60 years.
The first 164 pages remain unchanged, as well as the inclusion of
certain stories (Dr. Bob's Nightmare, among others). No matter
which edition of the book you own, reading the 1st edition gives
a great perspective, from both a historical and a spiritual angle,
of what arose from that first meeting of Bill W. and Dr. Bob.

24 Hour Emergency Residential
Program for Adults & Adolescents The Center improves lives with
Detoxification Services. Because many intoxicated persons may pose
a hazard to themselves or others, the Center has operated its Detoxification
Program since 1967. Services target drug- or alcohol-impaired residents
of St. Louis, Lake and Carlton Counties and are offered in the Center's
new building at 1402 East First Street in Duluth. Detoxification
services offer inebriated or otherwise-intoxicated individuals a
secure place in which to begin removing the chemicals from their
systems. The goal is to prevent injury and to serve as an initial
point of intervention for persons with acute chemical use or abuse
problems. A typical stay at "Detox" lasts approximately three days.
During this period, clients are under medical supervision. Nursing
care is provided. Licensed Chemical Dependency personnel also are
involved, working with both client and referrants to address individual
needs. |

The Center for Alcohol & Drug Treatment's
purpose is to solve problems and for 40 years it's been doing just
that. Founded in 1961, the Center was formed to deal with problems
associated with drug and alcohol abuse. The Center is a 501(c)3
non-profit organization. Most of us know that substance abuse affects
not only the person with the primary affliction, but also family
members, friends, employers, creditors — virtually anyone the afflicted
person contacts. The fact is that alcohol and drug abuse is a major
community problem, and the Center is active in helping individuals,
families, and communities. For the individual substance abuser,
problems can mount up quickly. Alcoholics and drug addicts often
confront — to name a few — ruined marriages and friendships, lost
driver's licenses, severe legal problems, foreclosures and repossessions,
lost employment. The addict's life can easily become unmanageable
and, without outside intervention, may spin completely out of control.
Fortunately, the Center is here to help. Using a combination of
traditional and innovative approaches to treatment, the Center has
aided thousands in northern Minnesota. In 1998 alone, Center programs
combined for 4,407 admissions. That adds up to a lot of improved
lives in 40 years of service. |

Marty Mann, a pioneer
in the treatment of alcoholism, is the namesake of the Marty Mann
House for Women in Duluth, MN. Marty Mann was the founder of the
National Council on Alcoholism and publicly carried the message
of recovery to other women. In 1939, that was a courageous message
to carry.
Marty Mann House was one of the first places women could gather
together and support each other in an effort to face the stigma
attached to women with addictions. It remains a place where that
happens as women still come in from the community an d serve as
sponsors, mentors and take part in the weekly recovery meetings.
Women, ages 16 and up are referred to Marty Mann House for the continuing
treatment of their addictions. Typically, they suffer consequences
of a legal, family, emotional, parenting and financial nature. An
AA oriented program, women ask asked t o participate in groups,
individual therapy, referrals to outside agencies and a variety
of the activities designed to help her live a stable and sober lifestyle
during and after her stay.
Each woman, guided by staff must set and accomplish goals before
she is discharged. Further, each resident is expected to learn to
take responsibility for her own life and demonstrate accountability
to the people she lives and works with. We hel p each individual
to set up an aftercare and relapse prevention plan as she finds
work or school and a place to live. We make use of resources in
the community to do that. As part of our services, she is able to
take part in Wilderness experiences or Dram a therapy where she
is challenged to practice new skills in an unfamiliar setting. That
is exactly what recovery requires and we hope those skills carry
over as she transitions back into the community. |

Detoxification
Detoxification is a process by which toxic or harmful chemicals
are removed from the body. The detoxification process is one in
which a person is assisted by specially trained medical and counseling
staff. Detoxification services are open and available twenty-four
hours a day, every day of the year. Call with questions about admission
any time at 218-327-1026.
Inpatient Treatment
Inpatient Treatment provides intensive therapy in all aspects of
recovery for those who are unable to maintain abstinence during
outpatient treatment. The residential stay is followed by an individualized
schedule of outpatient treatment during day or evening hours. The
length of outpatient treatment will vary according to length of
the residential stay, but the total length of the treatment process
for a combination of residential and outpatient care is typically
four to six weeks.
EXTENDED CARE: Extended Care offers the opportunity to practice
living without alcohol and drugs. The focus is on rehabilitation
and community reintegration, along with education, leisure time,
work skills and access to a wide range of resources, school, jobs
and health care.
Outpatient Treatment
Outpatient Treatment is an intensive, conveniently structured treatment
program for those individuals able to abstain from use of alcohol
and other drugs while involved in the treatment process. Treatment
may be arranged during the day, evening or a combination according
to need.
Aftercare and Relapse
Aftercare and relapse prevention services provide support and stability
for ongoing recovery of individuals who have completed primary treatment.
Both the men's and women's aftercare groups focus on issues such
as coping skills, securing ongoing support, family and marital dynamics,
work pressures, socializing, spirituality, relaxation and stress
management. Relapse prevention may be recommended for those considered
"high risk" for returning to alcohol or other drug use. Relapse
prevention builds awareness of a person's personal relapse process.
The goal is to explore old patterns and new choices to stop the
cycle from repeating.

specific treatment in a predictable and secure environment with
consistent support. Like the young men at MLRC, the young women
of Prairie House benefit from the opportunity to explore their personal
issues in an atmosphere that is sensitive to issues, such as victimization,
aggression or depression. The PHR facility is an 8-bed residential
care program created to help girls, age thirteen to eighteen, focus
on recovery from chemical use disorders without the distraction
of a coed environment. At PHR, teenage girls experience a structured,
safe, and challenging environment where they grow in self-esteem

It is our belief that alcohol
and drug addiction is a disease, not a character flaw or weakness.
Although addiction is an illness, it is not an identity. One characteristic
of addiction is acting in ways that are “out of character” for a
person. This generally produces feelings of guilt and shame. While
we recognize addiction as an illness, we also understand that this
does not absolve each person of responsibility for their behavior.
It is our firm belief that it is only by taking responsibility for
our actions that each person, and their families, can begin to heal
and forgive.

We provide residential chemical dependency
services for professional women seeking recovery. Drifens
(an anagram for "friends" and "finders") was conceived from a
story written by our founder about personal transformation. We
came from varied backgrounds but were all united in a mission to
"treat the whole person through time, well beyond the immediate
and limiting substance abuse or addiction." Each member of the
clinical team has extensive experience working with 12-Step
facilitation. We have spent two years expanding upon this proven
foundation (with the use of motivational interviewing and
cognitive behavioral therapy) to provide the breadth of
programming options necessary to satisfy the professional woman
seeking recovery. Oriented around the principles of compassion,
humility and inclusion, our team brings years of experience in
providing services to women and professionals. We understand the
professional's strengths are sometimes used to limit rather than
support their personal insight, understanding and choices. This
paradox often results in fighting against or avoiding the
inevitable underlying issues that need resolution including
addiction, depression, anxiety or other mental health concerns
that often occur together. |
