A
Program for You : A Guide to the Big Book
A very
readable, thorough, and helpful overview of the AA Big Book. This
is actually a textual version of the well known weekend long Big
Book Study seminars given by two gentlemen who shall remain anonymous
as in the book. I found this to be a great way to delve into the
Big Book again and look at it in a structured fashion. Once you
are finished with this book you will have learned about the history
of AA, the history of the Big Book, read the Big Book, and actually
studied the Big Book.

The mission of African American
Family Services (AAFS) is to help the African American individual,
family and community reach a greater state of wellbeing through
the delivery of community-based, culturally specific chemical health,
mental health, and family preservation services. The organization
was founded in 1975 to provide services to chemically dependent
people in a culturally specific context.
Originally called the Minnesota Institute on Black Chemical
Abuse (MIBCA) and then the Institute on Black Chemical Abuse (IBCA),
it became known as an effective treatment, prevention and aftercare
center. As it grew,
its services expanded to encompass other issues that often co-exist
with chemical dependency.
These services included family counseling, family violence,
crisis intervention and home-based services.
IBCA also developed a library of reference material, as well
as cultural sensitivity training programs for other agencies, which
provide services to African Americans.

Crossroads
2823 Wayzata Blvd.
Minneapolis, MN, 55405
Phone: (612) 374-0504
The purpose of the Crossroads Aftercare Program
is to help support young men and women in their recovery from the
disease of Chemical Dependency by providing a Transitional Semi-Independent
Living Residence with emphasis on post treatment services. Primary
treatment for this disease is emotionally draining and often leaves
the individual feeling frightened and unsure of where to go upon
discharge. For many, returning to the same environment would be
far too threatening for their sobriety so they look for a safe,
supportive place to live; a place where they can learn to cope with
life and its complexities while remaining chemically free. Crossroads
offers to these men and women a low-structured program of individual,
family, and group counseling in a home-like atmosphere. The focus
is to build self-esteem and restore those areas of life that have
been adversely affected by the disease. The desired outcome is a
lifestyle free from chemical abuse and anchored in the serenity
of believing in ones self again. |

"Many are finding their identity as Native People,
the beauty in their language, the spirituality that is rooted in
their cultural values, the lessons in the stories, the power in
the songs, and the importance of the ceremonies. Many native People
have voiced, that after they have gained sobriety, a light bulb
goes off in their heads and they say, “I was taught those things
of my culture by my parents, grandparents and other relatives, but
it didn’t register, either because I was too young or I was still
using. But now that I have a clear mind, it makes so much sense
and it’s so beautiful.” |

Methadone Treatment for Overcoming
Addiction to Heroin, Oxycontin, and Opium-based Prescription Drugs
Colonial Management Group believes that addiction to heroin and
other opiates is a disease. Colonial Management Group runs methadone
treatment centers to help addicts overcome addiction to heroin,
opium and opiate-based prescriptions. We use methadone treatment
as a way to relieve the craving for heroin, and opiate-based prescription
drugs (Dilaudid, Percodan, Percocet, Propoxyphene). Our goal is
to treat our patients with dignity and respect in each phase of
their treatment experience. We
focus the work in our clinics on managing the disease and strive
hard to improve our patients' quality of life. This involves implementing
the most current research findings in our treatment of our patients.

In 1991, a group of dedicated
professionals and recovered individuals shared their growing concerns
about the changing treatment environment -- difficulty accessing
services, increased cost, reduced length of stays and diminishing
focus on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. In response,
The Community of Recovering People (CORP), a non-profit organization,
was formed to explore new, more accessible approaches to sobriety.
The result is an innovative residential environment that provides
time out for those in need. The Retreat represents a non-clinical,
mutual-help approach to the problem of alcohol and drug abuse. This
supportive, educational environment is grounded in the spiritual
principles of Alcoholics Anonymous. By providing a safe and supportive
environment to study and practice these principles, the Retreat
opens the door to a life of contented sobriety. |

Way 12 Halfway House is a supportive
structured living environment designed to assist chemically dependent
people in achieving healthy, happy, sober lives. The program addresses
the many obstacles in life and sobriety that chemically dependent
people face trying to live a chemically free lifestyle. Each resident
at Way 12 moves at a different pace in their recovery. Our program
is designed to address this individuality. Way 12 is a halfway
house currently for 20 young males ages 16-25, which have completed
primary treatment for chemical dependency. Residents live in supervised
apartments where they are responsible for their own grocery shopping,
meal preparation, cleaning, laundry, and personal finances. The
program addresses the needs of the whole person; spiritually, intellectually,
emotionally, as well as physical health. Staff provides therapeutic
care while encouraging residents to learn ways of helping themselves
meet their needs and achieve their goals. Individual treatment plans
are developed for each resident using a high counselor to resident
ratio. The program builds on the process the clients made in primary
treatment and enables them to grow in sobriety as they make the
transition into young adulthood. |
